Thermodynamic Compassion
Sentiment is nice, healing is even better
Dear Readers,
A short post today on the power of what I call thermodynamic compassion. In physics, thermodynamics is the study of energy, transformation, and entropy. A sort of movement from order to disorder, and back again. For example, a tree absorbs sunlight and grows. Excess energy beads off as moisture in the air or as oxygen; wonderful benefits for the ecosystem. In a similar way, a body takes in food and oxygen, grows and sends fertilization into the soil and carbon dioxide.
As people, we are dealing with a wide range of things that are nourishing to us. But we are also weighed down — circumstances, money, other people in our lives. Often, we grit our teeth and try to forget about it.
I would suggest, kind reader, to think about hardships as fuel for a thermodynamic compassion practice. Like the tree giving moisture and oxygen into the environment, our hardships benefit us and our ecosystems.
You already know these sorts of people who have thermodynamic compassion. They’re the folks who immediately evoke calm, steadiness, and a playful happiness. You know, in your own body, their nervous system is deeply ordered. In the face of hardship and the undulations of life, they use thermodynamic compassion.
The process is simple. Suffering enters, they gather the facts like a scientist, and they listen to the wisdom of their emotions and thoughts. Finally, they create a container within themselves of amazing compassion that organizes unhelpful thoughts or helps them find power for their well-being. This is a pouring of self-compassion that is hot, strong, and forceful. Yet, gentle. It’s uncomfortable, sometimes.
Finally, wisdom emerges, and they can move in the right direction.
The wisdom can look like a few things. In this current generation of humanity, we’re learning boundaries, so that’s a common one these days. But it can also look like finding one’s voice, identity, and strength to stand for one’s desire and will. When it’s wrapped in compassion, it prevents egotistical over-inflation.
Suffering —> Raw fuel
Thermodynamic Compassion —> Organizing heat/process
Wisdom/action —> Transformed output
When there is a lack of thermodynamics in one’s compassion practice, the things that weigh us down stay there. It becomes the ache in the shoulder, the chronic headache, or the persistent out-of-nowhere crying. Folks not moving through compassion as a movement for self-transformation often come to see me as a client. It’s job security, honestly.
So the question is: We may possess compassion for ourselves and others, and are eternally gifting others love… but is it dynamic?
When compassion is heat and movement, compassion becomes an amazing, transformative force for yourself and others. We turn away from repression and lean into transformation.
Hope you’re all doing well!! Ready for summer coming up??
Love as always,
Miko
